Kate Veale emerges at the 5000m Race Walk field in Lille – Athletics news
Kate Veale, the 17-year-old girl from Ireland, earned a remarkable gold medal in the 5000m Race Wald field in Lille, at the IAAF World Youth Championships.
For emerging as the winner, the young girl covered the desired distance in twenty one minutes and 45.59 seconds. It was a remarkable finish as she reached the target line about 15 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Looking into the past professional history of the athlete, it dawns upon one that Veale has been an impressive runner and every time she has been there on the track, she has marked valuable success for her homeland, most of the times culminating in national
or international records.
In all the seven out of eight meets she has appeared on, she has improved or marked a new personal or Ireland’s national best. This is an altogether different matter that despite having marked a fourth position on the same distance track in last year’s Youth
Olympic Games held in Singapore, hardly anyone from the audience had taken her seriously and predicted for her success.
Given the fact that since her outing half around the world which she started from Ireland, Veale had not been into a 5000m contest and had appeared for the distance at Lille without any prior time clocked for it. What she had been doing was to concentrate
on the longer distances of 10km or so, where she possessed a personal best of forty-six minutes and 32 seconds at the European Cup Race Walking meet. The event was held in Portugal on May 21, where the skinny girl outdid a number of far more experienced and
quicker runners from across the continent.
While talking about this rather unexpected success, Veale revealed that she had always had the World Youth event in her mind and all her preparations were aimed at claiming the title. She said, “However, my training has all been geared towards the World
Youths, the World Youths has always been my main targets as it’s my last year in the category.”
Talking about the inspiration that pushed her towards this phenomenal victory, she said that she had been inspired by her coach and club-mate, Jamie Costin, as both of them ensured that her efforts would lift her to the apex of her athletics career.
