Kateryna Bondarenko, Yanina Wickmayer successful in the second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Ukrainian tennis player Kateryna Bondarenko earned a hard fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Sara Errani of Italy on Thursday to make it to the third round of 2011 Wimbledon Tennis Championships in United Kingdom.
Ranked 126th in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, Bondarenko made a solid start to the match. Breaking the serve early in the opening set, she gained the momentum she was looking for. However Errani concentrated
on her own game play and broke straight back to shift the balance of the contest.
Bondarenko had another chance of breaking the serve in eight game of the set, which she converted successfully to earn a vital 5-3 lead in the set. Holding on to her next service game comfortably, the Ukrainian pocketed the opener
6-4. Hitting 15 forehand and backhand winners in the set, she took complete control over the contest.
A great fight back from Errani was witnessed in the following set. The Italian looked down and out at the end of the first set. However, she showed remarkable fighting spirit and determination to force the match into the final
set. Serving with control and precision, she managed to take control of the points at crucial moments. Breaking the serve three times during the set, she denied her opponent the chance of wrapping up the match in straight sets. Converting the very first set
point, the Italian evened the set score 1-1.
Bondarenko covered all aspects of the game quite well. However, a large number of unforced errors in the second set did not help the cause as she missed certain opportunities. Fighting back brilliantly, Bondarenko stepped up and
raised the level of her game in the decider. Breaking her opponent twice, she raced to an impassable 5-2 lead in the set, serving for the match. Dashing a big forehand winner down the line, she secured a memorable victory for herself. The Ukrainian will be
taking on Russian Nadia Petrova in her next match-up.
Number nineteen seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium also made it to the third round after she came back from a set deficit to defeat Anna Tatishvili 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Court 14.
Wickmayer looked a bit out sorts as the match started. Committing 14 unforced errors in the opening set, she gifted the set score lead to her opponent 1-0. However she started to time her forehand and backhand shots a lot better
in the second set. Creating wonderful opportunities, the Belgian broke the serve at regular intervals throughout the match. She hit 8 stunning serve aces and 34 winners to seal the contest. Her next round opponent will be twelfth seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.
