Kateryna Bondarenko crashes out to Paula Ormaechea in the qualifiers – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Qualifier’s second seed, Kateryna Bondarenko, was trashed out from the BNP Paribas Open 2012 after a dismal performance against the Argentinean rising star, Paula Ormaechea, on Monday. She suffered a 6-7(3), 4-6 loss at the hands of the 19-year-old to exit from the qualifying competition of this hard court event held in Indian Wells, United States.
The world number 72 failed to find her rhythm at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and ultimately endured a disappointing straight sets defeat. She fought back hard in this 95-minute marathon but despite clobbering a better first serve share and committing fewer errors, Bondarenko suffered this shock.
The 25-year-old timidly entered the qualifying competition of this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event and suffered the first blow in the third game to go 3-1 down. Apart from recovering in the sixth game, the Ukrainian lost her serve again in the ninth game to trail at 4-5. However, she not only snatched a break back but exchanged another serve break to drag the set to a tie-breaker. Bondarenko remained at a disadvantage and eventually registered a 6-7(3) defeat.
Ranked 120th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Ormaechea on the other hand carried her momentum in the following set and got the critical break in the opening game. She remained focused after that and exchanged four serve breaks to clinch the set with a 6-4 success.
Summing up the Ukrainian performance at this prestigious event, Bondarenko coughed five double faults and clicked 20 out of 45 points on her first serve share. The veteran warded off half of the 16 breakpoints she came across and broke Ormaechea’s serve seven times, subsequently bearing this shocking defeat.
The Argentinean on the other side advanced into the final qualifying round where the local wild card entrant, Jessica Pegula, awaits her.
Pegula also dumped a seeded player out of this event before occupying this spot. She overpowered the 22nd seed, Bojana Jovanovski, in two sets’ tie-breaker in an hour and 48-minutes clash in their first meeting. The American took full advantage of the several unforced errors Jovanovski spilled to conquer the match.
