Kateryna Bondarenko defeats Olga Savchuk; cruises into the third round – Budapest Grand Prix 2011
Ukrainian tennis player Kateryna Bondarenko continued her impressive run on the hard courts of Hungary as she booked her place in the third round of 2011 Budapest Grand Prix on Wednesday with a superb 6-3, 6-2 victory over compatriot
Olga Savchuk. The 24-year-old started took some time to settle in the match but once she started to time her shots, she did not allow the challenger to breath in a match that lasted for only 1 hour and 1 minute.
In the pursuit of her second Women’s Tennis Association title, Bondarenko made a solid start to the match. Holding on first three serve games, she took the game score to 3-3 in the opening set. Ranked 102 in the world, Bondarenko
had her first chance of breaking the serve in the eight game of the set. Forcing an error from her opponent, she converted the very first break point to earn 5-3 lead. Holding on to her next serve game without any trouble, she claimed the opener.
Bondarenko capitalised on her psychological advantage brilliantly in the second set as she broke the serve on her opponent’s first service game to take a considerable lead in the set. Hitting the ball fiercely, she smashed her
wonderful forehand winners all over her opponent’s half of the court. Breaking the serve for the second time in the set, she raced to 5-1 lead. Converting a long rally in her favour, she ended the contest in style to advance into the next round of the WTA
tournament.
Savchuk, who was absolutely brilliant in her opening match , looked a bit out of sorts as she gifted points to her rival at crucial situations. Known for her never say die attitude, she is expected to come back strongly on her
next WTA appearance.
Bondarenko converted more than 72 per cent of the points on her first serve and she also dominated Savchuk in the serve return department of the game with her rock solid defence. She will be looking to continue her commanding form
in her upcoming matches as well.
