Kateryna Bondarenko upsets Greta Arn in 1st round – Texas Open 2011
The continuation of the main draw of the Texas Open 2011 saw another upset and this time it was world number 68 Kateryna Bondarenko versus world number 62 Greta Arn. The Ukraine Bondarenko avenged her loss on the hard courts of
Hilton DFW Lakes in Grapevine, Texas by achieving a straight set victory of 6-2, 6-3.
Lack of precision led Arn to commit three double faults hitting the net, where as Bondarenko performed with excellent precession and struck zero double faults. Serving first with determination was the Ukraine and opened the set
by hitting an ace.
Bondarenko’s serve was a powerful weapon that won her 60% of her first serve points and a total of 59% win in total service points, against Arn, who was only able to bag 41% of her total return points.
With a failing serve, one would’ve thought she would have had a better serve but her return was poorer than her serve and hence, was only able to attain 7 out of 29 points, making it an appalling 33% of her total service points
against Bondarenko, who was like a board at the back of the net rebounding shots, which enabled her to win an exceptional 67% of her total return points in the opening set.
The 25 year-old Ukraine had a sturdy defence which enabled her to capitalize on a hundred percent of her break points won and also named the set to herself by accomplishing almost twice as many points as her Hungarian opponent
(Arn) with a 6-2 win.
During the second set, Arn’s overall performance did not improve instead, this time she had a better serve but a below average return, which resulted in her losing most of the points in the total set score.
Although she perfected her serve and struck no double faults, she served first with cold feet and hit an ace opening the score card to 1-0. Even though, Bondarenko had committed 1 double fault, she managed to smash 2 consecutive
aces in the last two match points of the game and won a flawless game to lead the score at 2-1.
After that there was no stopping for the Ukrainian and she managed to hammer her way by achieving an exceptional 67% win in her total service points against the 32 year-old Hungarian, who only mustered a 33% win in the total return
points of the set.
The 32-year-old Hungarian was unable to set her rhythm in her serve and thus was only able to achieve a 48% win of her service points in the set but 25-year-old Ukraine pounced and every shot that came her way winning 52% of her
total return points in the set.
By saving 2 out of 3 break points and by breaking 32 year-old Arn twice she gained the statistical edge and achieved a perfect victory.
