Kateryna Kozlova downs Ellen Allgurin in Girls’ Singles second round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Blasting away Ellen Allgurin of Sweden with 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 score line in the second round of Wimbledon Championships, Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova is through to her third round match, being played here at the All England Tennis Club
on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old Kozlova shrugged off the loss of the opening set to oust the World No. 1047 in a gripping match lasting one hour and 56 minutes at the All England Tennis Club, extending her year-to-date win/loss mark to 12/5 matches.
The opening set went with the serve until Allgurin broke Kozlova in the fourth game, but the Ukrainian immediately broke back in the fifth, pumping her fist after thumping a forehand winner down the line. However, the Swede player
regained control by breaking Kozlova in the eighth game, after seeing her opponent’s successive backhands flung into the net, to lead 6-2.
The second set looked to be a mirror-image of the first with a decisive break of serve paving the way for Allgurin to lead the match with a 5-2 score. But an abrupt change was observed in the seventh game when Ukrainian quickly
recovered on behalf of Allgurin’s costly errors.
An expensive double fault in the second set cost Allgurin her serve as she trailed 5-6 in the game score. Failing to bounce back, the Swede lost the second set with five games to seven.
Resuming play in the third set, both players started off great matching neck and neck. A competitive hold of serves from Kozlova and Allgurin kept the score tied for the first four games. However, forcing back to back errors on
Allgurin in the sixth game, Kozlova was able to go 4-2 in the lead. Serving out the set at 5-2 the Ukrainian made the decisive shot of the day, winning the decider with a 6-2 score.
Taking 116 minutes of play, an in-form Kozlova continued her dominion over the Swede as she scored a whopping 22 winners while committing only two double-faults. Additionally, she secured 73 percent on first serve, 50 percent on
second serve and 43 percent on return while winning 75 percent of points through net approaches.
She now moves on ahead to play Victoria Duval of America in the third round. The latter defeated Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets to move on ahead at the event.
