Kathrin Demler wins 1500m freestyle age-group title - German World Championships Selection Trial
Kathrin Demler of SG Essen clinched the Women’s 1500m freestyle event on day five of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The teenage swimmer competed in the 14-year-old age category, where she claimed the title of the 1500m event, clocking a time of 17:11.63 minutes. The 14-year-old was almost eight seconds away from her closest competitor, Lena-Sophie Bermel of Swim-Team
Elmshorn, who pocketed the silver medal with a timing of 17:19.02 minutes. Bermel was almost six seconds ahead of SV Halle’s Tina Appelt, who followed them on the podium for the bronze medal, producing a time of 17:25.49 minutes.
Bermel completed the first round of her swim in a fastest time of 1:03.92 minutes. She was followed by Demler and Appelt, who completed their swims in 1:04.56 and 1:04.72 minutes for the second and third fastest spots, respectively.
In the second round, Demler gained a lead of 0.03 seconds, where she clocked 2:12.36 minutes to overwhelm Bermel’s 2:12.39 minutes effort. The two of them continued a head-to-head battle, where Demler remained only 0.49 seconds ahead of her strongest rival
and finished her round in 3:20.82 minutes, as compared to Bermel’s 3:21.31 minutes effort.
In the fourth round, she extended her lead to 0.67 seconds, touching the wall first in a fastest time of 4:29.41 minutes. She continued her dominance in the next round, where she gained a lead of 1.07 seconds over Bermel.
Demler gained a lead of almost two seconds from her fellow swimmer and amazed the arena with her gruelling efforts. She kept on enhancing her lead in the remaining rounds and touched the wall in 17:11.63 minutes for the gold medal, staying 7.39 seconds faster
than Bermel.
Moments later, 15-year-old Marina Sulzmann of SG Stadtwerke Munchen conquered the same event in 15-year-old age group. She claimed the title of the distant freestyle swim by clocking a time of 17:09.80 minutes. Her time was almost 21 seconds away from the
second fastest swimmer, Tamara Gebauer of SV Halle, who settled on the podium for the silver medal, clocking a time of 17:30.07 minutes. They were followed by Isabell Neumann, who obtained the bronze medal with a timing of 17:42.12 minutes.
Sulzmann was delighted with her win and expressed that she has worked very hard for the event and will try to improve her timings in future competitions.
