Kathrin Woerle capsizes Elitsa Kostova in round two - Civitavecchia Challenger 2012
World number 232, Kathrin Woerle, of Germany bounced back a set down to upset the 154th ranked Bulgarian, Elitsa Kostova, in the second round of the Civitavecchia Challenger. She won the match 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 and marched
on to the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
The opening set was completely hijacked by the Bulgarian contender who took lead in the second game with the help of a breakthrough. She quadrupled the lead with another combination of serve hold and a breakpoint. It was getting
pretty ominous for the German who was absolutely clueless as to how she should tackle this onslaught.
Nothing went in favour of the German and she lost the opening set in miserable fashion. However, she pounced on her competitor in the second part of the game. The German broke serve thrice on the trot to take an unassailable lead
of 5-0 and spared just one game for her opponent before enforcing the third set into the play.
Stage was set for an epic final set battle. Both players were pumped up to power down one another. It was all about holding the nerves and choosing the right shot at the critical stage of the games. With all the experience required
for this kind of scenario, the German player was hot favourite to win the final battle but the superior game play of her opponent depleted her odds of coming out victorious.
It was a stunning start to the second set. Both players traded breakpoints in the opening two games before registering serve holds to push the scores at 2-2. It seemed like this match will go down the wire but the German tennis
professional destroyed her opponent in the last four games of the match.
She allowed no opportunity to the Bulgarian participant to take control of the proceedings. It seemed like the 28-year-old German was the superior ranked player. She was timing the ball brilliantly; broke serve twice on the trot
and finish off the proceedings in an emphatic fashion. This was a stunning result for the German who needed such a fighting win to boost her morale.
