Kathrin Woerle loses to Alona Bondarenko in the second round – e-Boks Sony Ericsson open 2011
World number 114, Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine defeated German Kathrin Woerle with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 scoreline in the second round of e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday.
Apart from the second set deficit, the 26-year-old Ukrainian played a near-enough faultless match to win the battle of the right-handers in one hour and fifty minutes, as she overpowered Woerle to end her run here. Bondarenko had
rallied from 1-6, down in the second set to win her second round match and was again pressed in the third set, but she escaped that and beat the German to keep herself in the event.
In the first set, Woerle missed three break point chances in the opening game of the set where both players quickly went on the offensive, but the German player sent a forehand long to give Bondarenko a 6-0 lead. However, after
losing the opening set, Woerle did not lose her head and dug herself out of a hole with her backhand down the line which proved to be an effective weapon for her, as it was 6-1 to Woerle in the end. Having tied the score at one set apiece, the Czech entered
the second round match needing only to secure one more set to enter the quarterfinals of the tournament, and that was all she got.
Disclosing her views in a post-match interview, Bondarenko said, "I played better this match than in the first one. I hope the next one will also be good for me, I'm not playing as well as I was before my injury, but after a few
more tournaments I hope to get closer to that level."
Bondarenko polished off her three-set win with 57 percent on her service, 50 percent on return and 53 percent of points in total. By contrast, Woerle wound up her dreams with a meager 50 percent on service, 43 percent on return
and 47 percent of points in total.
The Ukrainian keeps her hopes of winning a maiden e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open title alive for at least one more match, while Woerle can now turn her attention to her next event of the season, the 2011 UNICEF Open, starting next week.
The win was Bondarenko’s second of the tournament, after dispatching compatriot Olga Savchuk in the first round of the tournament.
