Kathrin Woerle outshines Klara Zakopalova in the first round – e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open 2011
Unseeded German, Kathrin Woerle cruised through the contest against the second seeded Czech, Klara Zakopalova in the first round of the 2011 e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open on Monday. World number 144 left everyone in a huge shock when
she defeated her 110 places higher ranked opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, taking a little over an hour and three minutes to reach the second round of the tournament for the first time in her professional career of eight years.
The crowd at the Farum, Denmark, witnessed an interesting contest between two of the craftiest payers in women’s tennis. The German player had to work hard in the first set to take her Czech opponent down but opposed limited resistance
in the second set, racing through the contest in an emphatic way. The in-form 27-year-old Woerle laid claim to her 13th victory of the running WTA season at the tournament and moved ahead of her Czech opponent at the 2011 e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open.
It was a vigorously contested match by both the players but German’s victory presented that she was getting her rhythm at the right moment.
Woerle had a faltering start to the game and the Czech competitor took full advantage of it, breaking into lead early. The destructive Czech took a commanding position in the first set, reaching 3-1 and crafted another break point
at 4-1. However, the astounding German player took over the game from there onwards; saving the crucial break point to come right back in the game. One break point was converted by the Czech, while Woerle came from behind and belted two break points to grab
the first set with a 6-3 scoreline.
The second set all belonged to Woerle, whose dominance prevailed from the very first game. She reeled off 10 out of 13 first serve points and cracked 100 percent break point opportunities to outplay the Czech. The unseeded Woerle
dropped just two games and raced to victory at 6-2 to qualify for the second round at Farum.
This victory is an incredible stroke of luck for the 27-year-old Woerle, who easily beat her Czech opponent in straight sets. With this win, the German has also improved her head-to-head series to 2-0 and now moves on ahead to
face the Ukrainian in the second round of the tournament.
She will take on Alona Bondarenko in the next stage, who defeated her compatriot Olga Savchuk with a 6-4, 6-3 score line. Woerle and Bondarenko have already met each other at two different occasions and their head-to-head series
is tied at 1-1. Both players are in excellent form and look determined to reach the round of 16.
