Kathryn Meaklim captures Women’s 400m IM gold: Day one - South African Long Course Nationals
Kathryn Meaklim of KZNA-KZ captured gold medal of the Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on first day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Monday, April 16.
The 22-year-old Meaklim remained prominently ahead of her following swimmers and ensured her top finish on the medal rostrum for gold medal.
Meaklim enjoyed a lead of almost nine seconds over her strongest challenger and clinched the national title of the IM discipline by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 37.70 seconds.
Her scintillating effort was trailed by Jessica E Pengelly of NTS-NT, who seized silver medal of the event by producing a time of 4 minutes and 46.47 seconds.
The 20-year-old Pengelly was chased by Wendy A Trott of WPA-WP, who occupied bronze medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 47.11 seconds.
The bronze medallist was chased by Bianca J Meyer of KZNA-KZ, who completed her swim in fourth best place by posting a time of 4 minutes and 50.82 seconds.
The 23-year-old Meyer was chased by her team-member, Rene D Warnes, who stayed nearly one body length behind her and tapped the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 51.60 seconds for fifth position.
The 20-year-old Warnes was chased by Marlies Ross of NTS-NT, who stayed almost six seconds slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 57.42 seconds.
Subsequently, Ross enjoyed an advantage of nearly four seconds over Jessica S Liss of EP-EP, who secured seventh position of the event by hitting the finishing blockade with the timing of 5 minutes and 01.10 seconds.
The 16-year-old Liss was trailed by Lindsay M McLeod of KZNA-KZ, who failed to make an improvement in her pace and ended eighth by touching the wall with the timing of 5 minutes and 11.71 seconds.
In addition, the arena acknowledged notable efforts of all participants in the playoff of 400m discipline whereas the position holders were called upon the medal rostrum for their marvellous sprints at the medal ceremony after the session.
