Katich’s half century takes Hampshire to victory over Durham - Cricket News Update
In the Group B match of the Clydesdale Bank Pro40 championship, played at the Rose Bowl, Hampshire managed to overhaul Durham’s target of 200 for 7, thanks to the efforts of batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SM-Katich-c2543, who set up a four wicket victory for the hosts.
Katich’s half century contained three massive sixes and a boundary which helped him guide his side home with ten deliveries to spare. Earlier, Durham managed to crawl to 200/7 in forty overs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 as his spell
included three wickets for 39 runs. Amongst his victims were opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Breese-c1458.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Durham-c782 with a defiant 96 not out. His innings provided well needed substance to the scorecard, after his side was teetering at 41 for 3 in the 11th over.
Hampshire’s strong reply was cut short by some fine bowling in between by Durham. The foundation for chasing the total was laid by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Vince-c1657, who managed to put on 73 for the first wicket. Breakthroughs managed to
come at regular intervals for Durham as leg-spinner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Liam-Dawson-c1840, leaving the hosts at 5 for 171 in the 36th over.
Simon Katich however, was in full command and his innings was characterized by ruthlessly offensive game play. Despite his reputation for being a punchy player who is strong square of the wicket, he managed to crack a massive six to Borthwick who was troubling
the Hampshire batsman with his guile and turn at the other end. Katich was later joined by hard hitting batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mascarenhas-c912, with just 30 required of 29 deliveries required.
There was no change in the manner in which Katich or Mascarenhas went about chasing the score however. Mascarenhas managed to lift Borthwick for another towering six but was later dismissed as the leg spinner had him struck in front for 22. The LBW decision,
which worked against Mascarenhas, did not stymie the flow of runs for Hampshire. The remaining runs remained a formality.
In the end, Simon Katich faced at total of 62 deliveries for his half century, with an impressive strike rate of 95. For Durham, Borthwick was the pick of the bowlers in terms of getting key wickets at key intervals. He managed to reach relatively respectable
figures in the end with 4 for 51 from his eight over spell. Yet despite his efforts and the batting display by Gordon Muchall, Durham eventually lost by 4 wickets.
The Group C game of the Clydesdale Bank 40 Championship will be played between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802 at Arundel on the 16th of July.
