Katie Birchall wins Women’s 50m backstroke gold: Day seven – FINA World Masters Championships
Katie Birchall of Great Britain won gold medal of the Women’s 50m backstroke in the age group of 30-34 on seventh day of the 14th Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) World Masters Championships 2012 in Riccione, Italy on Saturday,
June 16.
Birchall remained prominent over her challengers throughout the event and tapped the finishing blockade for gold medal of the event.
With her alluring efforts, she remained nearly one stroke faster from her following swimmer and finished first with the timing of 31.38 seconds.
The champion remained 0.19 seconds faster from Florence Riera of France, who followed her on the finishing end for silver medal of the discipline by clocking an effort of 31.57 seconds.
Third position of the discipline was secured by Bilski Karine of France, who stayed only 0.40 seconds apart and posted a time of 31.97 seconds.
Similarly, the bronze medallist remained 0.33 seconds ahead of Bianca Lintker of Germany, who ended her swim in fourth best place by submitting a time of 32.30 seconds.
The German swimmer remained one stroke faster from her following opponent, Annamaria Gazda of Hungary, who occupied fifth fastest spot of the race by submitting a time of 32.53 seconds.
With her exhausting efforts, Gazda remained 0.39 seconds slower from overpowering her foregoing finisher as she snared sixth position of the discipline with an effort of 32.92 seconds.
Seventh spot of the event was secured by Julia Krajewski of Germany, who stayed 0.25 seconds behind and tapped the finishing wall with an effort of 33.17 seconds.
Following that, Catherine-Meze Pascaline of France secured eighth position of the shortest backstroke discipline as she stayed 0.04 seconds apart and reported a time of 33.21 seconds.
Ninth position of the 50m discipline was obtained by USA’s Stacy Peterson, who suffered a loss of 0.13 seconds from her foregoing finisher and reached the wall with the timing of 33.34 seconds.
The crowd acknowledged gruelling efforts of all participants in the 50m Masters events while the position holders were called upon the medal rostrum for awards and accolades at the prize distribution ceremony of the tournament.
