Katie Compton wins the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup Round 5
Katie Compton of Team Trek Cyclocross Collective wins the UCI Cyclo-Cross World Cup Round 5 after her astonishing performance during the event.
The American surprised her opponents by a splendid attack in the final kilometres of the race and easily occupied the top podium spot.
She completed the race in a total time of 38 minutes and 9 seconds, restricting her major opponents at Namur on Sunday, Sunday23 Dec 2012.
Compton is having an outstanding season with several top finishes in her bag in the current season including a first place finish at the UCI, Cyclo-cross World Cup at Plzen, Koksijde and Roubaix with a second place finish at Tabor Czech Republic.
She also managed to claim the top position at the Cyclocross National Championships and the Track Championships with a five place finish at the 2011-12 Cyclo-Cross World Championships.
Katie was delighted after winning the race as she restricted her major opponents with a convincing victory during the recent race.
She was delighted after winning the race and stated that the race was pretty technical but she managed to get the lead early on which helped her taking the top spot.
"The technical parts were fun, although the off-camber section was tricky. I love this race. Things are looking really good for the World Cup. I might not have to go to Hoogerheide to get the overall win," said Compton.
Katerina Nash of Team Luna Pro Team looked good but had to settle for the second position as she finished the race 28 seconds behind at the second spot with Marianne Vos of Team Rabobank Women claiming the third position.
“It was a tough 'cross, and it gets tougher if you see the mud from up close a couple of times," Vos said.
"I heard her coming on the run-up. I had to commit and had something extra for the final one and a half laps. I tried to keep it smooth from there," Compton said, describing how she quickly distanced Nash.
Helen Wyman of Team Kona, Nikki Harris of Team Yong-Telenet-Fidea Cycling and Sanne Van Paassen of Team Rabobank claimed the fourth, fifth and sixth positions in the respective order.
