Katie Douglas, Jessica Davenport, Ivory Latta: Top players from 14th June WNBA games – Part 1
On Tuesday, June 14, 2011, two games took place in the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA). In the first game of the evening, Indiana Fever knocked down Tulsa Shock 82-74 at Conseco Fieldhouse. The game was very tightly
contested in the first three quarters of the game and Indiana only just squeaked out a 61-60 lead, heading into the fourth quarter. However, Fever were terrific down the stretch and went on a 13-5 run to earn the win. With this victory, Indiana is now heading
the Eastern Conference with a 3-1 record.
Let us review the contributions made by players in this game and see whose performance really did make a difference:
Katie Douglas
Katie Douglas played a vital role in the Indiana’s success with a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds. In nearly 31 minutes, the Indiana guard pinned six shots from the long range, tying a career high and matching the franchise
record. Katie shot 8-for-13 from the field and scored 14 of her 22 points in the first half of the game.
Trailing by 52-50 with 03:33 to go in the third quarter, Douglas hit a three pointer to give the Fever a one-point lead. At another crucial moment when the score was tied at 58 with 01:19 to go in the third, she had another 3-pointer
to put her team ahead by 61-58.
The player is averaging 21.3 points and 5.5 rebounds during this season. In addition to her fantastic performance of the evening, she became the first player in the history of the league with at least 500 career three-pointers.
Jessica Davenport
Jessica Davenport played an effective game for Indiana and finished the game with 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The 25-year-old centre punctuated 10 of her 14 points in the final quarter of the game, shooting 5-for-10
from the field.
Briann January
Briann January added 12 points and a game-high 10 assists for Indiana in 28 minutes of action. The 24-year-old guard recorded 2-for-4 from the long range and also pinned in a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Ivory Latta
Ivory Latta was the only bright spot in the Tulsa’s defeat as she chipped in with a team-high 19 points, five assists and three rebounds. She scored 13 of her points in the first half of the game.
With 01:12 to go in the second quarter, Latta had a lay-up and a three-pointer to put Tulsa ahead by 43-42 at halftime. The guard also made two crucial steals in the 35 minutes she played, shooting 3-for-3 from free throw line.
