Katie Douglas strikes late to propel East to a 118-113 win over the West – WNBA All Star Game Recap
Indiana Fever guard Katie Douglas scored five of her 15 points in the last minute of All-Star game, including a go-ahead three-pointer with 56.7 seconds left, as the Eastern Conference team edged out the Western Conference outfit 118-113 on Saturday night at AT&T Center. It was the third All-Star game victory, the East recorded in the last ten tries.
Seattle Storm's forward Swin Cash topped all players with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the losing effort. The performance earned her MVP honour, which marked the second time in her career that Cash has taken home the MVP trophy, the first being in 2009. In addition to that, Cash, a four time All-Star, became the WNBA’s first All-Star MVP from the losing team.
Cappie Pondexter led the East with 17 points and seven assists. Tina Charles added 15 points while Essence Carson came off the bench with 13 points. Renee Montgomery punctuated 12 points and Tamika Catchings totalled 11 points in the victory while Angel McCoughtry grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the East.
Rebekkah Brunson was the second leading scorer for the West with 20 points and nine rebounds. Diana Taurasi and Liz Cambage racked up 13 points apiece while Penny Taylor posted 11 points and Maya Moore finished with 10 points for the West.
Cambage and Cash scored eight points each in the first quarter as West held a 36-33 lead going into the second quarter. In a tightly contested frame, Carson drove to the rim with 20 second remaining and tied the game at 65. However, Cambage hit a free throw right at the buzzer to put the West ahead by one point at 66-65 as the teams headed to the locker room.
The see saw battle continued in the third quarter, with both the teams cashing on one possession after another. Going into the last 30 seconds of the period, West held a 92-90 lead, but Catchings hit a pair of free throws in the dying seconds to knot the game at 92, heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter followed much of the same trend. With 01:19 left on the clock, Taurasi scored a lay-up to make it 113-111 for the West. However, Douglas responded with a three-point dagger and then pinned a pair of free throws to put the game to bed.
