Katie Ledecky overpowers Rebecca Adlington in Women’s 800m freestyle – London Olympic Games
Katie Ledecky of USA overpowered Rebecca Adlington in the playoff of Women’s 800m freestyle on seventh day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatics Centre on Friday, August 3.
The 15-year-old Ledecky became the centre of attention for everyone, as she defeated the world record holder and defending champion, Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain in the 800m discipline.
Ledecky stayed considerably ahead of her challengers throughout the race and touched the wall in an improved American record time of 8 minutes and 14.63 seconds.
Her gold winning effort remained nearly four seconds faster from Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain, who stepped on the victory stand for silver medal by producing a time of 8 minutes and 18.76 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Adlington, who stayed one and a half body length slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 8 minutes and 20.32 seconds for bronze medal.
Adlington was followed by Lauren Boyle of New Zealand, who was 2.40 seconds slower from her former finisher and transpired on the finishing blockade as fourth fastest swimmer with an effort of 8 minutes and 22.72 seconds.
Similarly, fifth best position of the race was secured by Lotte Friis of Denmark, who remained 1.14 seconds away from upsetting her preceding swimmer and submitted an effort of 8 minutes and 23.86 seconds.
The Danish swimmer was traced by Boglarka Kapas of Hungary, who stayed only 0.03 seconds behind and completed her race in sixth best place by producing a time of 8 minutes and 23.89 seconds.
The Hungarian swimmer was trailed by Coralie Balmy of France, who stayed almost six seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and settled on the wall as seventh position holder by reporting an effort of 8 minutes and 29.26 seconds.
Balmy remained in a lead of just 0.02 seconds over Andreina Pinto Perez of Venezuela, who failed to surpass any of her opponents and finished eighth in the event with a timing of 8 minutes and 29.28 seconds.
Furthermore, Ledecky was overjoyed with her accomplishment in the 16-lap freestyle event.
