Katinka Hosszu clinches Women’s 50m backstroke gold – 2012 Indian Ocean Meet
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary clinched gold medal of the Women’s 50m backstroke on opening day of the 2012 Indian Ocean Meet in St. Paul, Reunion, on Friday, December 28.
The Hungarian swimmer dictated terms to her opponents in the shortest backstroke discipline as she went unravelled in the final round and proved her eligibility for the crown.
Hosszu faced tough contest from her toughest challenger in the first half but with her notable pace in the second half, she managed to snare top spot on the medal rostrum.
She demonstrated her stupendous pace in the race and occupied the crown with an effort of 28.40 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Aleksandra Putra of Poland, who was 1.38 seconds slower and surfaced on the finishing end for silver medal by clocking a time of 29.78 seconds.
Putra was traced by Christelle Bertsch of France, who was hardly half a body length slower from her and secured bronze medal of the race by producing a time of 30.10 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Aina-Estellah Fils Rabetsara, who was 1.68 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and surfaced on the finishing end for fourth position by hitting the wall with the timing of 31.78 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Florence Damour of France, who stayed 0.15 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and hit the wall with the timing of 31.93 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Aude Faubourg of France, who was only 0.04 seconds slower from her former finisher and emerged on the finishing end by touching the wall with the timing of 31.97 seconds.
Subsequently, Faubourg was chased by Faubourg’s teammate, Solene Schwab, who suffered a deficit of 0.05 seconds from her preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with an effort of 32.02 seconds for seventh place.
Emily Chan Chee was disqualified from the race due to an inappropriate start and thus failed to secure any position.
In addition, Hosszu was overjoyed with her medal raking effort ant received medal and accolades at the victory ceremony of the tournament.
