Katinka Hosszu secures Women’s 200m backstroke gold – Swimming news
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary secured gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on the second day of the 2013 Mare Nostrum Circuit in Canet, France on Sunday, June 16.
The Hungarian swimmer lived up to the expectations of her opponents in the distant backstroke discipline as she went full throttle in the playoff.
Hosszu remained prominent for the title from the start as she gained a comfortable lead over her strongest rival. With her impeccable pace, she remained full body length ahead of her toughest competitor and secured the title with an effort of 2 minutes and
09.76 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by Daryna Zevina of Ukraine, who was 0.80 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing end for second position by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 10.59 seconds.
The second best finisher was chased by Duane da Rocha of Spain, who was 0.21 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and emerged on the finishing end for third position by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 10.80 seconds.
Fourth position of the swim was obtained by Sinead Russell of USA, who was 1.44 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 12.24 seconds.
Similarly, Russell was chased by Eyglo Osk Gustafsdottir of Island, who stayed 0.98 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and concluded her race in fifth place with the timing of 2 minutes and 13.22 seconds.
Sixth spot of the discipline was secured by Nathania Van Niekerk of South Africa, who remained 1.60 seconds slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 14.82 seconds.
Melanie Costa of Spain, who finished her race in seventh place by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 16.95 seconds, traced Niekerk.
On the other hand, Breanne Siwicki of Canada was disqualified from the playoff due to the violation of the 15-meter rule and could not secure any position.
Furthermore, Hosszu was extremely delighted with her top finish in the race and received medals at the prize ceremony of the event after the session.
