Katinka Hosszu takes Women’s 400m freestyle gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary took gold medal of the Women’s 400m freestyle on day two of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday, October 14.
The Hungarian swimmer, who just missed out the top spot on the podium in the 400m Individual Medley (IM), restored order in the mediocre distant freestyle event and paved her way to the victory stand for gold medal.
Hosszu devastated hopes of her challengers in the sixteen-lap freestyle discipline as she proved her mettle for the title. She enjoyed a two-body length lead over her closest swimmer and sprinted her way towards the wall for the crown with an effort of 4
minutes and 03.83 seconds.
Her title claiming effort remained 1.54 seconds faster from Melissa Ingram of New Zealand, who followed her on the victory stand for silver medal with an effort of 4 minutes and 05.37 seconds.
Ingram was chased by Lotte Friis of Denmark, who stayed half a body length behind and surfaced on the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 05.86 seconds for bronze medal.
The third position holder was followed by Manuella Lyrio of Brazil, who stayed 0.71 seconds behind and settled on the wall as fourth best finisher by submitting an effort of 4 minutes and 06.57 seconds.
Lyrio was traced by Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary, who was three body lengths behind and touched the wall for fifth position by submitting an effort of 4 minutes and 09.31 seconds.
Sixth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Rieneke Terink of Netherlands, who sprinted her way towards the finishing end with the timing of 4 minutes and 09.84 seconds.
Terink was trailed by Celine Bertrand, who was almost seven seconds behind and completed her race in a time of 4 minutes and 16.01 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Jessica Cavalheiro of Brazil, who was almost eight seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 24.85 seconds.
Furthermore, Hosszu expressed happiness over her accomplishment in the 400m event and raked medal at the victory ceremony of the tournament.
