Katinka Hosszu wins Women’s 400m IM gold: Day one – Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool, Atlanta
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary occupied gold medal of the Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on opening day of the 2011 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Atlanta on Friday, December 16.
Being part of the European team, the 22-year-old Hosszu demonstrated her superior efforts and outshined her competitors for the title of the IM discipline.
With her phenomenal efforts, she became the top contender for gold medal of the event. She completed her initial 100 metres of the race in a fastest time of 1 minute and 00.29 seconds. She was followed by Caitlin Leverenz of USA, who remained 0.55 seconds
behind and covered the equivalent distance in a time of 1 minute and 00.84 seconds.
The Hungarian veteran accelerated her efforts in the subsequent rounds, where she ended her first half of the race with a fantastic time of 2 minutes and 06.39 seconds. With her tremendous effort, she remained nearly two seconds ahead of Leverenz, who completed
her initial half with an effort of 2 minutes and 08.28 seconds.
Interestingly, Leverenz elevated her efforts in the next two rounds, where she managed to surpass her strongest competitor. Hosszu failed to sustain her spot in the following two rounds, as Leverenz posted a top fastest time of 3 minutes and 22.28 seconds.
She was trailed by Hosszu, who stayed 1.12 seconds slower than her and completed her 300 metres of the swim by clocking a time of 3 minutes and 23.40 seconds.
Nevertheless, the European expert geared up her swim in the final 100 meters of the race, where she edged out her challenger on the finishing wall by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 24.37 seconds for gold medal.
She was trailed by Leverenz, who occupied silver medal of the swim with a timing of 4 minutes and 24.62 seconds. The bronze medal of the event was obtained by Elizabeth Beisel of USA, who reported a time of 4 minutes and 26.48 seconds.
Furthermore, the arena applauded for ruthless efforts of all podium finishers while the session ended after the conclusion of all swimming events.
