Former Kiwi right-arm pacer Katrina Keenan has been appointed the head coach of the New Zealand Women's cricket team, known as the White Ferns, as announced by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) today.
Expressing the board’s excitement at having Keenan onboard, NZC director of cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Marshall-Buchanan-c68302 claimed that her “impressive record as an international player combined with her coaching success made her the outstanding candidate to coach the White Ferns”.
“She brings great qualities to the role, including a genuine passion for women's cricket developed over many years in the game as a player, mentor, and coach,” http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Buchanan-c48808 added.
Keenan made her debut for the New Zealand Women in 1995, and went on to play a total of 5 Tests (with 15 scalps to her credit) for the national side, with her best performance in the extended-overs format being a 6/73 against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 Women during the
White Ferns’ tour of England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Women. In addition, Keenan was also a part of the side that
won the World Cup in 2000.
Since retiring from the game, Keenan has gone on to serve as the National Women's Development Officer at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 Cricket. She has also served as assistant coach for the White Ferns, and has coached the Japanese national women’s cricket team.
Her most recent post has been as the coach of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Auckland-c766 Women, who went on to clinch first place in the domestic 50-over competition, and second place in the domestic T20 competition. Her new post as coach of the national team will see her taking on the
approaching Rose Bowl series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 next year.
Expressing her eagerness to take on her new duties, Keenan outlined her own credentials, and reiterated a determination to improve the team’s performance.
“I am incredibly motivated by working in women's cricket and excited by the opportunity to continue the good work of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Raymond-Stead-c58556,” she said. “... I am passionate about women's cricket ... I'm excited by the challenge and determined to work hard with the players
to improve the performance of the White Ferns.”
