Katrina Konopka and Jack Forese clinch 100m freestyle gold titles – 2011 YMCA Long Course Nationals
Katrina Konopka and Jack Forese clinched the titles of Women’s and Men’s 100m freestyle respectively, on the fourth day of the 2011 Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Long Course Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia.
Konopka of Middle Tyger-SC presented a remarkable effort in the two-lap swim, by occupying the gold medal of the event in a time of 57.25 seconds. Her time was only 0.46 seconds away from the national record of 56.79 seconds, set by Emily Lloyd of Anne Arundel-MD
in 2009.
Konopka was in a lead of 0.26 seconds over her subsequent competitor, Madeline Smart of Wilton-CT, who claimed the silver medal of the swim, by reporting a time of 57.51 seconds. Smart was just 0.07 seconds faster than her following swimmer, Kelsey Buckley
of Suncoast-FL, who followed her on the victory stand for the bronze medal, as she posted a third fastest time of 57.58 seconds.
Katy Luchansky of Wilton-CT was the fourth finest swimmer of the discipline, as she remained just 0.43 seconds behind Buckley and clocked a time of 58.01 seconds. Alexandra Marshall of Northwest-NC emerged as the fifth fastest swimmer of the 100m event,
as she was only 0.37 seconds behind her foregoing competitor and reported in a time of 58.38 seconds. In the meantime, Elizabeth McDonald of Cheshire-CT claimed sixth best spot of the race, by producing a time of 58.43 seconds.
Moments later, Forese of New Canaan-CT occupied the top finest spot in the Men’s equivalent event. Forese won the gold medal of the event by posting a stupendous effort of 51.74 seconds. He was 44 seconds ahead of his closest rival, Connor Maher of Cheshire-CT,
who earned the silver medal of the swim in 52.18 seconds. Lucas Bureau of Laurel Highlands completed the podium by earning the third fastest spot, with a timing of 52.75 seconds.
Bureau defeated his following swimmer, Taylor Adams of Wyckoff-NJ, who remained only 0.02 seconds away from him and posted a time of 52.77 seconds. Justin Stewart of West Shore-PA was the fifth finest swimmer of the event, as he stayed just 0.59 seconds
away and produced a time of 53.66 seconds. He was 0.30 seconds ahead of his next rival, Kyle Madley of SomersetHills-NJ, who secured sixth position of the event, by submitting a time of 53.66 seconds.
In addition, the arena acknowledged the appreciable swims of all participants, while the winners of each event were awarded with medals and accolades for their immaculate swims in the 100m freestyle event after the conclusion of the session.
