Kauto Star lines up for Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase
Kauto Star’s considerable improvement after a terrible tumble last month prompted trainer, Paul Nicholls, to give him green light for the upcoming Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The legendary runner was described as ’50-50’ after he sustained soreness following a heavy fall during a round of schooling a few weeks ago.
Under Ruby Walsh, Kauto Star was running quite superbly during a practice session, when a slight miscalculation took him down.
It was such a heavy fall that some doubts started surrounding Kauto Star’s participation in the Cheltenham Festival.
However, his massive improvement during a gallop at Wincanton last Friday was quite satisfying for Nicholls.
The remaining doubts vanished on Monday morning, when the 12-year-old produced an ‘awesome’ performance during an intense practice session.
In his Betfair column, Nicholls said that he is quite delighted with the way Kauto Star recovered from the injury. He also confirmed his champion trainee as an intended runner in the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup, set to take place this Friday.
“Clive and I have given Kauto Star the green light for the Cheltenham Gold Cup after a very good schooling session on the grass this morning. Ruby came over to school him and Kauto was awesome, just as I'd thought he would be. He jumped six fences - the
plain fence and the open ditch three times each - and he was foot perfect and looked magnificent,” said Nicholls.
He continued:
"I have just put the phone down to Clive and, barring any mishaps in the next few days, Kauto lines up for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Friday."
Kauto Star will step out on the course in search of his third Gold Cup title. The veteran is among 34 possible runners, who will chase a hefty cash prize.
According to the current betting card, Long Run is sitting at the top. Nicky Henderson’s seven-year-old, who is aiming to defend his crown, has been declared 2-1 favourite by Paddy Power.
Kauto Star is 10-3 second favourite with Bet365 and SkyBet. The two-time Gold Cup hero looks in good shape and if he manages to carry forward his good work, he will be a delight to watch.
