Question:

Kawasaki GT550 running problems?

This is the last time i will ask on here about this bike promise. I havnt yet got any new ideas i havnt already tried.

The bike is a 100% standard 1992 Kawasaki GT550 which has been completetly rebuilt. This model has the same carbs as a ZR550.

The bike has a stock airbox, stock carb jets - 92 main 35 pilot.

I have turned the pilot screws in so they are fully closed and using choke the bike will start and run at 5thou.

I turn off the choke and adjust the idle so that it runs at about 14thou( so its idling only on the main jet circuit).

My problem is that the idling speed goes up n down between 800-1700 rpm. when i rev it - it is rough sounding and on closing the throttle the revs hold at about 4-thou and 3 thou for about 1-2 seconds.

If i open the pilot screws to say 1 1/2 turns then the problems gets worse- and i end up with a situation where i can not set the idle s***w without it either holding the revs at about 4-5thou or dropping off and stalling.

Further more, on restarting the engine when hot it 'blips' by about 1thou- without touching the throttle. The hotter it gets the worse the symptoms get to the point that it will rev at 6-7thou when ive been on a 15minute run and either stop at a junction or restart the engine.

Also with these symptoms, when im riding the bike holds the revs at 3-4thou when riding with a closed throttle( when hot).

Things ive checked:

- compression when cold

- compression when hot

- cylinder head for leaks

- Valve clearance

- inlet rubbers for leaks,splits

- airbox rubbers for leaks

- airbox for leaks( other than the intake!)- as these airboxes are in two sections.

- removed carbs and stripped, cleaned myself five times, took to a proffessional mechanic who check them too.

The wierd thing is if i cover 3/4 of the intake on the airbox, the revs just increase- if i fully cover it then it will start to stall.

If i cant find a solution then my last attempt is to fit carbs and inlet rubbers off a G4 and see if that makes any diffrence- as there is wear on the butterfly area on my current carbs and it appears wierd to me that no adjustment seems to make any diffrence.

Any ideas?- other than scrap the bike.

As im none the wiser!

  1. have you checked the vacuum diaphrams for any holes it would only have to be the size of a  pin hole. this happened to my gt 550 and caused similar problems to yours.

  2. Forget the engine.. that's fine..

This is a carb, or air leak problem... and as you say you have checked all the inlet rubbers, we can determine that you have a problem with the carbs.

Diaphragms, float level, needle position, internal leaks.. could be any or more of these...  if you have checked everything against the manufacturer spec... and you still have a problem, I would be tempted to just replace the carbs..

  3. Might sound like a silly question but have you had the carbs balanced? Have you checked the floats?

  4. go to macanicks
