Kaya Turski collects Women’s Ski Slopestyle gold at Winter X Games Tignes for third consecutive year
Canada’s Kaya Turski asserted her dominance in the Women’s Ski Slopestyle Final that went down in France on Wednesday afternoon, March 14, to collect her third consecutive Winter X Games Tignes gold medal.
Australia’s Anna Segal finished in runner-up place to take home silver while Canada’s Dara Howell secured the last remaining spot on the podium to clinch bronze medal.
The third edition of the European version of Winter X Games attracted the best female skiers from around the world to compete for the coveted medal at one of the biggest sport of action sports in the world.
The 23-year-old Turski had made history at Winter X Games Aspen earlier in the year by becoming the first freeskier to earn a three-peat in Winter X Slopestyle and went on to attain the same milestone in Tignes after a phenomenal performance in Women’s Ski
Slopestyle Final on Wednesday.
The Montreal-based freeskier asserted her domination in the battle for the coveted honours during her second run that featured a switch 450 onto the flat down box, right-side 360 onto the butter box to backside 270 onto the down box, right-side 540 safety
grab, switch left-side 360 safety grab, switch right-side 720 mute grab. The outstanding effort served to put her in the lead with a score of 92.66, which held up until the end to put her on the highest spot on the podium.
One of the biggest highlights of Turski’s performance came during her third run, which was her victory lap, when she landed the switch 1080, much to the delight of the crowd who showed their appreciation by cheering their lungs out.
The 25-year-old Segal put on a remarkable performance in the Final as well, though she failed to get past her Canadian rival’s score. Scoring a 91.00 off her second run which featured a 540 mute grab, right-side 720 safety and left-side 720 mute grab, the
Melbourne-based freeskier walked away with the silver medal.
“Kaya always steps it up, so even though I had a good second run, I knew I'd have to step it up on the third run to top Kaya,” Segal said. “I'm just really happy I landed my run.”
The 17-year-old Howell proved wiser beyond her years as she managed to edge past the likes of Vermont’s Devin Logan to clinch the last place on the podium with her 89.66-point Run 2 that featured a cork 720 true tail grab and rodeo 540 critical grab.
It turned out to be yet another year of Turski’s domination of Women’s Ski Slopestyle at Winter X Games Europe. It would be interesting to see if the Canadian would be able to hold on to her throne against the world’s best female freeskiers next year or
will someone finally step up to replace her on the top of the podium.
