My husband and I are buying kayaks next Saturday, I was ust wondering what the laws are for kayaking? I cant seem to find it online, does that mean their arent any? Does it have to be registered like boats do? Im looking for someone who really knows, someone who actually kayaks and knows their ****. Im in Michigan, by the way, in case it varies from state to state. Thank you!

  1. Whoa! You need some lessons first. Try the Nantahala Outdoor Center in NC. Bear Paw OC in Wisconsin. You will get experience in different kinds of boats. Inquire at the local DNR office for information.


  2. In Michigan, Privately owned non-motorized canoe, kayak, or rowboat of length 16 feet or less do not need to be registered.

    Michigan's PFD law permits a vessel that is less than 16 feet long, or is a canoe or kayak, to choose to have either a wearable PFD (Type I, II, or III) or a throwable PFD (Type IV) for each person on board.

    Use common sense.  Get proper instruction if you are not experienced boaters already.  Wear your lifejackets!
