I've got a bullet proof roll, so would it be safe to kayak on flatwater alone with neoprene spraydeck?

  1. if you mean going out to some nearby flatwater to practice some play then you should be fiine. but if there is ANY flow or hazzards downstream then i'd strongly advise against it. plus when you practice ALWAYS test the depth of the water. you dont want to knock yourself of a rock. i often paddle down in the old swimming baths but thats because i know for sure they are extremely safe. BTW i didnt tell you that you should paddle alone

  2. Lots of people paddle alone on flatwater or even easy whitewater.  Some paddle alone on very difficult whitewater.

The difference is that those people are confident in their skills for the type of water that they are paddling alone in.  When you are by yourself, your safety margin is drastically reduced.  On moving water, any swim could turn into a much bigger deal than it would with others in your party (to fish you and/or your gear from the water).  Also, if something bad should happen (hitting your head and knocking yourself out, being swept into an undercut/logjam/etc...) there is nobody to help you.

The fact that you're asking this suggests that your confidence is not at a place where you should be going out alone.  Find a buddy.  Search the web for a paddling forum, check the post board at your local shop to find paddling partners of like ability.

  3. I don't care for the spray skirt. Too claustrophobic. But I don't eskimo roll either, so yes, I do kayak alone on lakes if my buds aren't available to go. The only time I went rolled out was when my friend thought the deck would be a good place to tandem ride. Didn't work out so well but we had a good swim and a laugh over it! That, I don't recommend.

  4. Simple answer is...no, you should never boat alone.  That being said, I still paddle lakes alone, usually early in the morning.  The solitude can't be beat.  I guess as long as you are comfortable with your skills, the decision is yours, as long as you understand the risks.

    Paddle often and paddle safe!!

  5. Rule number ONE! Do not boat alone. The basic rule suggests that boating parties always have three teams or individuals. One is in trouble, second assists and third  goes for help.
