For a beginner, which is best? conventional or sit-on-top?

Only advantage I can think of,(s-o-t) is it being easier to remount should one fall off. Any other reason?

  1. I really think it is a personal thing.  I tried a sit on top and did not like it, I have friends who love theirs.  I would suggest you visit a paddle shop that sells various brands and types, do some test paddling and then get the one that feels like the best fit for you.  I like the feel of being lower in the water, which you will not get with a sit on top.  I opted for a larger cockpit, which makes getting in and out easier.  You might even want to take a class designed for beginners before you make your purchase, this should help you feel more confident and comfortable no matter what type of kayak you choose.

  2. well if you tip over easier to get off of to not drown      depending on how your going to ride mainly

  3. Kayaking is a difficult sport to master. A regular kayak is hard to enter and requires skill to wet exit. A Sit-On-Top obviates both of these concerns. The SOT is good in warm water. They offer very wet rides. The SOT might be an easy  first step to learning kayaking. All in all the SOT is a limited boat compared with a closed rigid kayak.

  4. Well for me I think its the one you sit on top is the best one..

I feel safe with that one.

  5. I have a sit on top. They are great.

Some good things about sit on tops:

1.)They have the ability to drain, if water gets in the boat

2.) They are easy to get back on if you happen to fall off

3.) You can buckle most of your gear down

4.) they are better for shallow water

5.) Many come with tank wells

6.) you can easily change postions
