Kayla Brumbaum and Sean Johnson win 50m breast-stroke heats – 2011 YMCA Long Course Nationals
Kayla Brumbaum and Sean Johnson won the qualifying rounds of Women’s and Men’s 50m breast-stroke meets respectively, on second day of the 2011 Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Long Course Nationals taking place at the Georgia
Institute of Technology Aquatics Centre, in Atlanta, Georgia.
Brumbaum dominated the Women’s 50m breast-stroke category, by occupying the fastest qualification spot in the finals, with a timing of 33.30 seconds. Her time was 0.52 seconds slower than the national record of 32.78 seconds, made
by Emily Weir of Wilton-CT in July, 2010.
She was followed by Katherine Parker of Anne Arunder-MD, who stayed 1.03 seconds behind the top fastest swimmer and posted a second fastest time of 34.33 seconds. Carlyn Evans of UpperMainLine-PA captured the third fastest qualification
spot in a time of 34.33 seconds. She was followed by Rachel Stoddard of SomersetValleyNJ, who remained 0.08 seconds behind Evans and entered the final as fourth fastest swimmer in a time of 34.47 seconds.
Gabbie Pettinichi of Me Lyons-OH and Mariah Akinbi of Powel Crosley-OH were the fifth and sixth qualifying swimmers, with timings of 34.55 and 34.75 seconds, respectively.
In the Men’s corner, the equivalent event was conquered by Johnson, who entered the finals with a new national record time of 29.47 seconds. He improved the previous national mark of 29.56 seconds with a difference of 0.09 seconds,
made by R. Henikman of Mansfield. Jared Kauffman of Middle Tyger-SC and Conner McHugh of Door Country-WI were the second and third qualifying swimmers, as they posted timings of 29.99 and 30.17 seconds, respectively.
They were followed by Matthew Hooper of Rapid Area-MI, who stayed 0.17 second behind McHugh and qualified in a time of 30.34 seconds. James Logan of Ridley-PA and AJ Burt of Powel Crosley-OH claimed the fifth and sixth fastest spot
of the swim, with timings of 30.45 and 30.53 seconds, respectively.
Furthermore, the arena appreciated the commendable swim of all participants, while Johnson expressed happiness over his record-breaking performance and said that he will try to do the same in next round.
