Kaymer could overtake Tiger as number one in the world
German golfer Martin Kaymer hopes to overtake Tiger in the world golf ranking this week at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters. Kaymer will need to win the event or finish runner-up to grab the top spot.
The 25-year-old is currently ranked third in the world behind Tiger and Lee Westwood but leads the European tour’s Race to Dubai. Gaining the top spot would make him only the second German, behind Bernhard Langer, to have the title of world number one.
If Kaymer hopes to gain this title he will have to fend off an array of world class golfers at this week’s European tour stop. One of the main sources of competition will be Ireland’s Graeme McDowell who sits second in the Race to Dubai.
Also in the field this week are Ross Fisher, Peter Hanson, Miguel Angel Jiménez, the Molinari brothers Edoardo and Francesco as well as Sergio Garcia and José Maria Olazábal.
Kaymer is coming off a recent win at the Dunhill Links Championship played at historic Saint Andrews. He won the event by three strokes in frigid conditions and a four day total of 17-under par. His most recent tournament saw a lackluster performance from
Kaymer at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf played in Bermuda. Kaymer with rounds 74 and 71 finished tied for third with McDowell behind David Toms and winner Ernie Els.
Kaymer is going into this event with high confidence thanks to a breakthrough year with strong showings at three of the four majors of the year, finishing eighth at the U.S. Open, seventh at the British Open and winning the PGA championship.
If Kaymer with 14 professional wins makes it 15 this week he will be the first player since Vijay Singh in 2005 to knock Tiger off the top of the world golf rankings.
