Kazakh Gennady Golovkin scheduled to defend his titles against Russian Dmitry Pirog – Boxing News
Gennady Golovkin, the current IBO and WBA world middleweight champion, in a recent press conference announced that he will defend his titles against the undefeated Russian prospect, Dmitry Pirog, the current WBO middleweight champion, instead of taking on
Felix Sturm, the current WBA super world middleweight champion.
Golovkin, 30, was eyeballing Felix Strum for his title but after his acceptance of the bout with Daniel Geale, the Kazakh proud was left with no option but to take on Dmitry. According to the tidings, the venue of the engagement is still to be decided however
the date and other minor details have been made public.
The duo will take on each in a 12-round bout on August 25, 2012 and the showdown will only have Gennady’s dual titles on the line. While sharing his thoughts in a short interview, Golovkin commented that he was eager to take on Felix in fact dubbed the bout
as important.
The Kazakh surging pugilist stated, “For me, it was important to fight Felix Sturm, but he signed a contract to fight against Daniel Geale. For me, the fight against Dmitry Pirog in the United States is a good opportunity to show myself in the mecca of professional
boxing. I have long wanted to get into the ring in America.”
Gennady has been in a total 23 bouts and boasts an undefeated streak. The Kazakh pounder has never lost even a single bout and has nailed 20 of his total opponents by sheer knockout. The aspect that makes the clash an interesting one is the fact that both
men are undefeated and one will certainly leave the ring with his career’s very first loss.
While putting forth his thoughts about Dmitry and his abilities, Gennady simply uttered a one liner, “Pirog is a good boxer, a strong puncher, but I am too. This will be a great fight.”
Gennady’s Saturday night opponent, Dmitry, 31, has been in a total 20 bouts and resides just after Gennady in the World Boxing Organisation’s rankings. The Russian proud has collected 15 of his total 20 wins by knockout and also possesses a decent jab.
Pirog grabbed his WBO middleweight gold in a bout against Daniel Jacobs and since then has defended it against Javier Francisco Maciel, Gennady Martirosyan, and Nobuhiro Ishida.
The bout will certainly be a classic one as both men have almost equal experience, power, abilities, talent and above all streaks on the line. Gennady needs to come up with a flawless plan as he also has his dual titles to defend in addition to the streak.
