Kazakhstan Open: HP Bacher loses to Scott Henry in playoffs
Austrian HP Bacher faltered in the final moments of the Kazakhstan Open, as he lost to Scott Henry on the second extra hole, in the playoffs.
Bacher displayed a stellar performance in the final round at the Zhailjau Golf Resort, and came close to inflicting a defeat on his nearest rival Henry.
He got off to a poor start on Sunday, as he bogeyed the first hole that he played. However, it was the only bad shot the he played during the final round.
He then added two birdies and an amazing eagle on the front nine to get into contention for the top spot on the leaderboard.
The back nine of the course witnessed him play amazingly well, and he drained five birdies to surge to the top of the leaderboard with a 19-under par tournament score.
In the meantime, Henry was just one stroke behind him, standing on the 18th green after two strokes. The Scottish star astonished everyone in the field by sinking a 25-foot birdie putt and forced the game to enter the playoffs.
On the first extra hole, Bacher played a brilliant shot from the rough to within seven feet of the hole. However, he missed the putt for a birdie and settled for a par.
In the meantime, Henry also parred and moved back to the tee for the second extra hole.
This time, Bacher failed to challenge his rival, as he missed an easy four-foot par putt. On the other hand, Henry turned in the ball for a birdie and took the European Challenge Tour’s ‘Major’ title home.
“I didn’t get the tee shot right either time at the 18th,” Bacher said. “I had a tough downhill lie on the edge of the bunker for my second shot the second time around”.
“The putt to lose it was exactly the same putt I holed to get a birdie and get into the play-off but I just hit it too firm,” he added. “It’s still the best result I've ever had so that’s nice. It’s a very positive week. Going into today it looked like I
had no chance of getting in any play-off and I had a great final round so I'm not too disappointed”.
