Kazan hand-over the Under-23 European Fencing Championship flag to Bratislava for 2012: Fencing News
The closing ceremony of the Under-23 Kazan European Fencing Championship is to be held today, May 31, after the closure of the competition at the Wrestling Palace, Ak Bars in the capital of Tatarstan, Kazan in Russia.
This day of the junior championship will feature three team events namely, Women’s epee, Men’s sabre and Men’s foil, after which the closing ceremony will begin at a new venue.
On this occasion, the European Fencing Confederation’s (EFC) representatives will be handing-over the flag to the organising committee of the championship for its next destination in 2012, which is Bratislava.
This traditional flag hand-over will be conducted at the venue, Palais des arts, where all the fencers, as well as press for the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism for the Republic of Tatarstan will be present.
The closing ceremony will be attended by the EFC President, Frantisek Janda, who is a Czech Republic native and as well as the spokesperson for the European Fencing Championship’s organising committee that has been finalised for the 2012 edition of the Under-23
championship in Bratislava. Moreover, he will be accompanied by Julius Kralik, a Slovakian, and some more personnel who will be representing Tatarstan’s Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism.
Until now, the last day held in Kazan U-23 championship had been fortunate for the host team. Russia won all the three gold medals of the team events held on, May 30, including Men’s epee, Women’s sabre and Women’s foil competitions.
In Men’s foil team discipline, the top three spots were secured by Russia, Italy and Poland, respectively.
In Women’s sabre, the top three spots were occupied by Russia, Poland and Azerbaijan, respectively.
Lastly, in the third event, the three podium places were taken up by Russia again as first, Germany as second and Poland as third.
It was surprising to find Germany outplaying the strong Italian female fencers. Moreover, the championship was more lucky for Poland as compared to Italy, on the fourth day of the event, with one silver and two bronze medals.
