Keanu Asing and Bede Durbidge claim victory in Round 3 at Reef Hawaiian Pro
Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and Australia’s Bede Durbidge walked away with top honours from their respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats that went down at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the first of three events on the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown of Surfing,
which continued at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Saturday, November 17, 2012.
Both Asing and Durbidge advanced through into the fourth round (Round of 32) after their Round 3 success.
Brazil’s Jadson Andre and Hawaii’s Gavin Gillette made the Round 4 cut as well after securing runner-up place in their respective Round 3 heats.
The clean four-foot waves breaking at the Alii Beach on the latest day of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event set the stage for a series to thrilling contests between the talented surfers from around the globe, with all of them having
their sights set on the $250,000 prize money and ASP ranking points.
Pitted against Andre, Kerr and Toledo during the 13th heat, Asing had his work cut out for him.
The Hawaiian surfer, however, rose to the occasion and put on an impressive performance. Locking his first business-wave, Asing posted a 7.50 on the score-board and went on to add an additional 6.83 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total
of 14.33 points.
Andre made the Round 4 cut as well after getting to a heat-total of 12.90 points, which included a 7.23 and 5.67 points.
Australia’s Josh Kerr finished in third place with a heat-total of 12.23 points, while Brazil’s Filipe Toledo had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 8.80 points. The bottom-two finish resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The 14th heat turned out to be a one-sided show, with Durbidge taking a comfortable victory after collecting a couple of scores in the seven-point range to eventually finish with a heat-total of 14.10 points.
Gillette finished second after scoring a 5.20 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 4.67-point ride, thus registering a heat-total of 9.87 points.
Australia’s Yadin Nicol finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.77 points, while Hawaii’s Olamana Eleogram filled out the fourth spot after finishing with a heat-total of 7.00 points.
