Keanu Asing and Gavin Gillette emerge triumphant in Round 2 at Reef Hawaiian Pro
Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and his fellow countryperson Gavin Gillette made the Round 3 (Round of 64) cut at the Reef Hawaiian Pro, the first of three stops on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, after clinching victory in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96)
heats that took place at the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii on Friday, November 16, 2012.
Hawaii’s Olamana Eleogram finished just below Asing in second place during the 13th heat to accompany the latter into the next round. France’s Adrien Toyon finished in third place, whereas Hawaii’s Kevin Sullivan had to settle for fourth place.
The bottom-two finish resulted in their elimination from the competition.
The 14th heat saw Brazil’s Filipe Toledo accompany Gillette into the next round after securing runner-up place, while Brazil’s Ricardo Dos Santos and Hawaii’s Nathan Florence finished in third and fourth place respectively, thus getting removed
from the contention for the event title.
Despite the challenging conditions on offer at Alii Beach on the latest day of the competition, Asing seemed to be in no mood to settle for anything less than a win.
As the battle got underway, the Hawaiian surfer took his time to adjust to the waves before eventually managing to post a 5.00 and 4.50 on the scoreboard.
Even though the resultant heat-total of 9.50 points hardly came off as intimidating, it still proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.
Eleogram was also successful in extending his life in the event after landing in second place through a heat-total of 8.34 points, which included a 6.67 and 1.67-point ride.
Toyon finished third with a heat-total of 7.53 points, while Sullivan had to settle for fourth place after registering a heat-total of 3.26 points only.
The 14th heat saw Gillette walk away with the win after finishing with a heat-total of 12.43 points, comprising of a 6.60 and 5.83-point ride.
Toledo accompanied him into the Round 3 field after clinching second position through a heat-total of 11.83 points, which included a 6.10 and 5.73-point ride.
Dos Santos finished third with a heat-total of 5.27 points, while Florence had to settle for bottom position after putting on an ordinary performance that resulted in a dismal two-wave total of 3.26 points.
