Keanu Asing and Nathan Yeomans head into Round 5 of Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and America’s Nathan Yeomans confirmed their place in Round 5 (Round of 16) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after clinching top honours in their respective Round 3 (No-Loser Round of 24) heats at the Itauna Beach
in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday, May 24.
Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas and Filipe Toledo succumbed to Asing in the seventh heat of Round 3, consequently getting relegated to the fourth round (Round of 24) of the competition.
The eighth heat sent two more Brazilians, Leonardo Neves and Yan Guimarares, into the relegation round after they conceded victory to Yeomans.
Day 3 of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event kept the adrenaline-pumping action running at Itauna Beach, with the world’s best surfers putting on exquisite performances in glassy two-to-three foot waves that were on offer.
The seventh heat of Round 3 saw Asing take on Dantas and Toledo in a three-man battle for a spot in the fifth round, with the losers getting relegated to the fourth round instead of getting eliminated from the competition.
As the battle got underway, the sole non-Brazilian surfer in the heat managed to beat the odds to claim victory. As the heat got underway, Asing got off to a slow start, but stepped up in the final minutes of the heat to put a terrific combination of tricks
on display. Earning a 6.20 off his first business-wave and backing it up with an impressive 8.10-point ride, he finished with a heat-total of 14.30 points, which held up until the end to walk away with the win.
Dantas finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.33 points, while his compatriot Toledo had to do with a third-place finish following a 12.13-point two-wave total.
Taking on Neves and Guimarares in the eighth heat, Yeomans had her work clearly cut out for him. He was up against a couple of surfers who unarguably had more local knowledge of the conditions as compared to him.
As the battle started, the American surfer drew first blood, posting a 5.67 on the score-board. After a long and desperate search, he added another 6.67 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 12.34 points. The score kept him in the lead until
the end to take him through into the next round.
Neves scored a 5.13 and 6.80 off his best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 11.93 points, while Guimarares finished at the bottom due to a heat-total of 11.74 points. Both the surfers moved into the fourth round to surf again for a place in the fifth
round.
