Keanu Asing and Taj Burrow power into Round 4 of the Australian Open of Surfing – Surfing News
Hawaii’s Keanu Asing and Australia’s Taj Burrow clinched top honours in Round 3 (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing that went down at Manly Beach in New South Wales, Australia, on Friday, February
17.
The competition was getting intense as the field kept getting reduced. Only the fittest were allowed to advance through into the next round of the event and thus the surfers were not holding anything back as they tried to overcome their competition and best
the demanding surfing conditions on Friday.
In the 11th heat, Asing shone the brightest as he walked away the win after finishing with a heat-total of 12.53 points, which comprised of a 6.43 and 6.10-point wave. The victory sent him through into Round 4 (Round of 24).
Hawaii’s Granger Larsen took the first runner-up place to accompany Asing into the next round. He finished the heat with a two-wave total of 11.46 points, which comprised of a 5.53 and 5.93-point wave.
France’s Maxime Huscenot finished third with a heat-total of 10.57 points, while Australia’s Creed McTaggart rounded out the fourth position with a two-wave total of 9.70 points. Both the surfers got eliminated from the competition as a result.
The 12th heat saw the formidable Australian force Burrow exhibit the class and style that has made him one of the best surfers in the world. Unloading his aerial skills in the two-foot waves, the crowd-favourite posted a 7.67 and 7.33 on the score-board
to finish with a heat-total of 15.00 points. The score turned out to be decisive, sending him into the next round.
Brazil’s Jesse Mendes finished in second place with a heat-total of 12.70 points, which comprised of a 6.50 and 6.20-point wave.
Ian Gouveia of Brazil was forced to make a premature exit from the competition after finishing in third place with a heat-total of 9.94 points. Australia’s Perth Standlick scored a heat-total of 7.00 points to finish in last place, getting eliminated from
the competition as well.
With the third round of Australian Open of Surfing wrapped up, the event moved on to the fourth round to shrink the field even further and retain only the most in-form surfers.
