Keegan Bradley falters at the PGA Grand Slam
On a day where everybody shot in the 60s, only Keegan Bradley managed a round in the 70s. Bradley shot one-over 72 for the day and is currently six shots behind the first round leader, Padraig Harrington.
Keegan got in to the field after Rory McIlroy opted out of the event due to his commitments on the European Tour. McIlroy is in China currently, hoping to secure the title at the BMW Masters.
Harrington, too, got an alternate entry after Ernie Els had withdrawn from the event, due to an ankle sprain. Although the ankle seems ‘okay’ but doctors have advised some rest before stepping on the course.
The 2011 PGA Champion found it tough going right from the start but he hopes that he can make a big comeback tomorrow.
Bradley is the defending champion. For a year or so, he is known for making remarkable comebacks. Last year, Bradley was in a similar situation but his six-under on the front nine helped him secure his first PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Keegan did not play that bad a round as it seems. It was just a stretch of a few bad holes that really did the damage.
He was two-over by the time he finished his front nine and after that it was all an upward trend of recovery for the world number fourteen.
A double bogey, bogey and a bogey on the 4th, 5th, and the 6th hole respectively proved to critical for the young American, although two birdies on the 7th and the 8th did repair some damage.
Keegan started off with a birdie on the back nine, which was followed by another birdie on the 15th. However, a bogey, birdie and a bogey on the last three holes meant that he stayed over par for the day.
"You know, Padraig is playing very well," said Bradley. "I've been six shots back before with less time, so I look forward to going out tomorrow and just making a million birdies and having a good time.”
He stated, "Padraig played great today. If he plays the way he did, I have no chance, but I look forward to a nice challenge tomorrow".
Keegan, however, is hopeful of making a strong comeback on Wednesday.
