Keegan Bradley shoots course record to lead the HP Byron Nelson Championship
The United States’ Keegan Bradley fired a course record 10-under par 60, at TPC Four Seasons Resort, to take a three stroke lead over Charl Schwartzel, in the opening round of the HP Byron Nelson Championship, on Thursday, May 16, 2013.
The HP Byron Nelson Championship is known for attracting a strong line-up each year. This year too, the tournament organisers have managed to feature some of the prominent names on the PGA Tour, including the likes of three time PGA Tour winner Ryan Palmer,
The reigning WGC – Accenture Match Play champion Matt Kuchar and legendary Vijay Singh.
Bradley, the winner of the 2011 edition of the event, started on the back nine of the course, and birdied five of the first six holes that he played, to mark a stunning start to his campaign in Texas.
The 18th hole, his ninth, witnessed him conceding a bogey, followed by losing another shot on the first hole, to move back to three-under par score.
The next eight holes witnessed him adding another seven shots to his scorecard, thanks to his five birdies, along with an amazing eagle on the eighth hole. At the end of the day, he was well ahead of his rivals on the leaderboard.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he expressed his pleasure in making such a good start, and said that it was really special for him to shoot a course record at one of his favourite golf courses in the world.
"It was rare to match up a ball-striking day and make everything [on the green]," said the three-time PGA Tour winner. "It never happens, probably a couple of times, and it happened today. The hole looked huge. Even the putts I missed almost went in, and
that's when you know you're putting really well”.
"Shooting a course record is pretty unbelievable at an event like this, considering the history and the players that have won and the players that have played here before me,” added the American, who won the PGA Championship during his rookie season on the
PGA Tour in 2011.
