Keep my chinchilla?

I was given a chinchilla in Feb. from a family friend whose daughter did not take good care of him. It did not take alot of time for my chin to get use to me and trust me but now its not the same. I started a new job in late May and i have to work nights so i only see him for a couple mins before i go to bed. I still try to let him out a couple nights a week but now he seems very unhappy. Hes not as playful, he wont let me even get near him. When i try to pet him or play with him he runs and cries and starts breathing heavy. Im moving to FL in sept. and i dont know how hes goin to deal with the change. I dont know what to do, should i keep him or try and find him a new home? I really love my chin but i dont want him to be more unhappy. What can i do?

  1. It sounds like your chinchilla is extra sensitive to change. He might really not make it through another change.

Let's track his change pattern. First off, he wasn't cared for by his first owner. He has a second owner now, who can barely see him. (I'm not trying to put guilt on you, I'm just restating and summing up what you've written.)This is a problem.

I really think you should find a new home for this chinchilla, considering the fact that he does not like change. This might be very hard for you, but it's probably best for the chinchilla, if you're moving and you're working so much that it's hard for you to see him.Chinchillas take a lot of care.

    Good luck with your Chin,

  2. your chinchilla has had a hard life it seems. i would reccomend finding a new owner for your chinchilla that will spend lots of time with him.  but make sure the new owner is responsible, trustworthy, and animal savvy.  do not give your chin to a child. find a person who will love your chin for the rest of his life because it would be awful for him to have to go to a new owner after that.  another idea is to get another chinchilla so your chin will have a companion while you're away. provide them with a large cage and lots of things to do.  chins form strong bonds with each other and you will often find them playing or cuddling. good luck!
