Keep vaio from downloadin updates?

Question

I just bought avgn-fw1400 vaio laptop with 3gb of ram and 250 hardrive. Its only been two weeksand already and my laptop(on its own accord) started downloading updates and everything that ate up my space. it went from 202 gbs originally to173. (i myself only installed about 4 gigs of software) So i restored my c drive back to original condition. Not a day has passes by and it went from 202 to 195 already. How the heck do i stop the updates orwhatever its trying to install or download?

What Operating System do you have? ie xp, vista. Control Panel, Security, and under Security center, click on turn automatic updates on off. That's it for vista, xp is probably pretty close.
