Question:

Keeping The Proper Distance From The Police?

Is there a recommended amount of distance that a person should keep from a cop for the sake of safety for everyone?

Let me explain. Many times when I see the police they have their hands on their utility belt or near the weapons in it. I'm not sure whether they are holding it because the belt and their contents are heavy or to protect themselves from some crazy person coming up on them and trying to disarm them.

I try to maintain a certain amount of distance with the police/security whether at work at Uncle Sam's or on the street when I see a police officer or a security guard transporting money at the bank. I never walk up from behind them. I don't want to startle them. If I have to ask them a question, I always verbalize it or speak to them from their front. But what is the recommended distance to keep from an officer or security guard?

  1. I would recommend at least 4 feet, or two arm lengths.

This ensures that the cop feels safe, and you feel safe.

If you are too close to the cop, they will let you know, but if they want to get closer they will.

Cops will hold on to their belts for many different reasons.

    1) Have something to hold onto.

    2) Keep the belt in place, and not fall.

    3) Protect themselves in case someone pulls out a weapon (quick access to gun, radio, or baton)

    4) Make sure no one can remove an item from their belt.

But yeah,  keep your distance, and make sure the cop feels safe.  Knowing he feels safe, will also allow you to feel safe.

  2. Anything within 30" is considered a "personal zone". It is best to stay outside of it with anyone you are talking to. Many people get uncomfortable whe you invade this area.

  3. I've got lots of cop friends and they prefer a little bit over an arm's length, so as to not be able to be physically touched, but each situation is different. Don't crowd them though, especially if a situation is heated. Some officers are really jumpy, especially when scared.

Security guards are about the same, matters what they're guarding, but a comfortable couple of feet is always nice.
