Question:

Keeping Window Glass in Place?

I purchased an older door several months ago to refinish. The stain glass in the door was what caught my attention.

After getting the door home and preparing to strip it, I started with the glass removal first. That was when I noticed that the glass was being held in place by silicone.

The wooden frame on the front side is what I expected. It is about a 1/4 inch or more deep. On the backside of the door, there should have been wooden strips to hold the glass in place.

Now that the door is finished and I am ready to put the glass back in, I'm at a loss as to how to keep the glass in place. The front side looks great but the back side does not have the finished look that I want.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to hide the edges on the glass? I don't want to put putty or silicone back.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

  1. Go to the hardware store and tell them you want some glass points, there little triangle mettle pieces you tap down to hold the glass in place

  2. Try to get the same or similar molding thats on the front. You might not get the exact 1/4 inch molding/window stop, but it should be close.
