Question:

Keeping a black horse's coat from fading?

This isn't really a question, just a piece of knowledge I wanted to share. We have this black horse that lives outside and his coat got UUUUGLY faded tan/yuck colored. Rather than getting him an expensive supplement like Black As Night, we started giving him a tablespoon of paprika in his feed each night and within 2 weeks, he was JET BLACK again (still living out in the sun!) Does anyone else have any amazing home-remedies that they have found to work?

  1. suppliments. my horses is the same way. people say to keep him in a stall

  2. No amazing remedies, but do you think that would work for other colors, like put the dapple back on my gray geldings butt?  I have never heard of this but I would be willing to try it...thank you so much for sharing...

  3. I didn't think Paprika was in Black as Knight and I didn't really think it all that expensive.

BUT have you done any looking into why this has worked?

I don't mistrust you - don't get me wrong, but I know why most of the ingredients in Black as Knight work and I know they won't harm my horse.  I would be interested to know why the Paprika has worked and be assured it won't cause other side effects you don't know about - because honestly if it were that easy, you'd think many would be doing it.

Some other things I've heard people do is feed garlic and apple cider vinegar (can't remember how much) to a horse to keep the flies from biting.

You've probably heard about the Skin-so-soft keeping deer flies and gnats away - my experience is that while it DOES keep them from biting, it does not keep them from buzzing you and driving you NUTS.  I would LOVE to hear how to get gnats to disappear all together.....

    Can't think of anything else.....

  4. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds are amazing with keeping horse coats shiny and healthy.  They also help keep color more natural.  They are completely harmless to the horse's digestive system (if fed in moderation).  My vet recommended a handful in their feed bucket every few days.  The natural oil is great for the health of the coat and hooves.  I feed my horse a handful about 3x week and his coat stays nice year round.  He's a red chestnut but he looks copper in color.  Our new vet was shocked to find out my horse was 18 years old.  She said that his overall health and appearance are "very impressive."  He gets no other supplements, by the way.

  5. This isn't a home remedy, but some fly repellants have sun block in them as well. I have a mahogany bay who's kept in the pasture 24/7, except for when we have extreme weather. His coat used to bleach out and turn a muddy color in the summer. I started using Endure (made by Farnam) on him a few years ago and now his coat stays gorgeous.

  6. Okay if this is true that would be great for my horse. Just wondering, does it have any side affects?
