Question:

Keeping humidity in my ball pythons cage?

I have a ball python in a decently large aquarium. Ever since my boy got upgraded to a larger tank I cannot seem to keep the humidity in. I've tried everything, I spray his tank at least 3 times a day but in about 10 minutes it falls back to 50%. The vet wants me to keep him at about 65% but aiming more towards 80%. I went and got new bedding that says it will keep humidity in, but no such luck. Any suggestions? Please help?

  1. I have a 40 gal breeder and one thing I have found to help is have the water bowl on top of the side with the under tank heater. Make sure you have a little bit of substrate or some paper towels underneath it because if you spill water on the glass it can crack. I also cover the part of the screen top not covered by my hood with a towel.

It really isn't that bad to have the tank at about 50% humidity for most of the time; it is really most important to get it into the 80% range when they are in shed.  To be honest you might run into mold or fungus or health issues if you constantly kept your tank at 80% humidity.

When I first got my snake I went so far as to put a waterfall in his tank, but now I realized I can just spray it down pretty well with a squirt bottle about and hour before his light goes off during the time when he is shedding and he has PERFECT sheds every time.

    Good Luck

Speaking of which I am about to go spray it down right now cuz hes sheddin!

  2. I live in Colorado so it is usually very dry and what I do to keep humidity up is soak a towel with hot water, wring it out just enough so it's not dripping and then I cover about 2/3 of the screen with it. It brings the humidity right up and will last about 8 hours before being wet again. You can cover more of the tank as needed just make sure it doesn't touch the light.

  3. Does your terrarium have a screen top? If so, try covering most of it with a trash bag and hand towel. This combo kept the humidity in great for my ball python.

  4. Just have a humid hide for him to go into if he feels he needs more moisture. You can make this out of a closed Tupperware with a hole large enough for him to get into it cut in the side, and fill it with spaghnum moss and keep it moist at all times. Also, you don't want humidity to be at 80% all of the time, or he will get sick. It should be 60%-70%. It should only be at 80% during a shed. Also, if you have a screen top, you could cover part, NOT all, or if with plexi-glass.
