  1. Ooooh ouch! Matts are very painful if not taken care of. If they're too bad for you to cut all the matts out, take them to a vet first, they know how to do it without hurting them. After all the matts are out make sure you brush their bottom area at least twice a day to keep from matting again. Also, a bath once a day wouldn't hurt either.

I did this for my peruvian guinea (Sadie) and she was gorgeous. Never had any problems with matts on her bottom. She ended up winning first place for her species and best of show 3 years in a row at our town fair. =) Quite the famous cavy she was. =P

  2. i have that same problem!  i would always try brushing out the yucky matts, he didnt like that! i show him in 4h so his hair was susposed to be nice and long. so i was told to cut it! it worked! now i brush him (almost) everyday!

when the hair gets longer u can wrap it. here is a picture of a wraped guinea pig. http://www.storybookcavies.com/061216%20...

also on the same site there are instrutions on how to wrap a long haired guinea pig.http://www.storybookcavies.com/wrapping....

    i hope this helps!

    good luck!

  3. What breeders of long haired guinea pigs do is with their show cavies, they put the pig's hair up in rollers. Usually they are made of paper so if the pig chews on them it won't harm them. If you don't want to do that then what I would suggest is trimming the hair.

  4. Brush them once a day to make sure they have no knots.

    Hope I helped

  6. Oh, lord, I have this same problem.  I love long-haired guinea pigs, but they are a pain to keep clean.  I haven't found a perfect way yet.  I just cut the hair around her bottom (not an easy task!) and I get this spray that is a deodorant for guinea pigs.  The smell is still there though, so good luck getting better advice.  I'll be reading your responses as well!
