Question:

Keeping weeds out of the flowerbed

Last year we put down weedblock fabric and about 4 inches of mulch, I've started removing the fabric, as it doesn't seem to stop anything from growing through it and there was plenty of stuff growing in the mulch as well.

Any suggestions? I live in central texas, its been in the 100s most of the summer so far. I have 2 big century plants and some other cactus, also a pair of Sago palms that I'm going to move to a shader area, as they aren't doing to well in the afternoon sun.

People have suggested newspaper and rock, as the rocks will get hot enough to kill just about anything trying to grow there. Any chance that's true? Should I use dark colored rocks or light?

  1. I had similar problems in my flower beds in Kansas. I sprayed round up and killed all the weeds then applied PREEN. The stuff doesn't kill weeds but prevents new growth. They also have mulch and other products to help with weed control.

With the round up, preen and lots of mulch I have probably had less than 10 weeds this entire summer. It takes a little time and money, but sure beats pulling weeds all summer.

  2. It has been my experience that 4" to 8" of mulch will smother the weeds. As for newspaper and rock "wow" think 100's hot now.In my heart I feel more mulch and your problem will fade.

    My Best

  3. The best thing to do is pull the weeds by hand or use an herbicide. Then throw down pre-emergent. It will stop any new seeds from sprouting once you remove the weeds

  4. I would suggest spraying or pulling the weeds and continuing with the weedblock and mulch. You'll eventually break the growth cycle. You can use any kind of gravel instead of the mulch, if you want. I would suggest lighter colors, to keep the radiant heat down. It's already hot enough in central Texas.
