  1. Our Keeshond has been through extensive testing at the UW-Madison Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for food and skin allergies.  We had those black crusty skin break-outs biopsied and they are diagnosed as "canine pigmented viral plaques" or "verruca plana."   (In humans, its a type of wart.)  Our specialist in Madison said it was not uncommon in Keeshonds.  It's viral and recurring but nothing serious and really doesn't seem to bother our dog at all.
