Kei Corry pockets 400m freestyle title – Australian Age Multi Class Championships
Kei Corry of Nelson Bay pocketed the gold medal of 400m freestyle in Boys 19 & Over category on the foremost day of the 2011 Australian Age Multi Class Championships. The competition is a three-day event and its first session was organised at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra, on Friday, October 7.
The event was scheduled for the multi-class disability swimmers from S6 to S16 falling under the respective age group.
Corry emerged as the most powerful swimmer among his rivals and was able to take the gold medal home. The 19-year-old Corry had a second fastest seed time, but with his exhausting efforts in the final round, he captured the gold medal.
Corry, who has S14 disability level, was facing only two swimmers as his competitors, Ki Murphy of Central Cairns and Hay Smith of Blacktown.
He clocked a wonderful time of 4 minutes and 58.15 seconds for the title of the event. The champion had an immaculate start, where his powerful dive and immaculate strong strides made him prominent for the gold medal. His noteworthy efforts throughout the eight-lap freestyle discipline cemented him as the winner with ease.
Apart from Corry’s effort, spectators experienced a hot-blooded effort of Murphy and Smith, who put together a great show while trying to escape each other over the finishing wall.
Blacktown, who remained marginally away from his competitor until the third lap, failed to continue his sprint in the final lap. Murphy was almost two seconds behind him in the final-lap but with his promising swim, he won the silver medal by hitting the wall in a time of 4 minutes and 51.87 seconds. In the meantime, Smith, who remained 1.41 seconds slower than his former swimmer, reported a time of 4 minutes and 53.28 seconds for bronze medal.
Corry was delighted with his gold claiming effort on initial day of the competition. Furthermore, the arena was excited with the alluring efforts of all age group swimmers, while the meet concluded after the session’s completion.
